Gravel Car Rallying for beginners - in Australia

Yep, I have got a little bit distracted from my Kitesurfing piece.  And yes I am still Kitesurfing and yes it is loads of fun, but over here it is largely a summer sport and lad has to amuse himself through the winter, so I hope to document a bit of my current (other) passion.

Ok, so you want to start Rallying, you have seen the very cool cars on the World Rally Champs and you think to yourself "yep, that is very me".  Well you can do just that as long as you have a spare million dollars (litterally).

Or

You could get yourself into rallying for as much as it costs to get an old car, throw in a roll cage and other safety equipment that is required.

The thing is, it is just as much fun.  It is amazing how many top level drivers I speak to who remember fondly their days in an old dunga Datsun, often referring to it as the most fun days of their rallying career.

So the trick is, don't go setting the bar too high.  Keep it realistic and get out there and do some big skids.

Over the coming period I will start to outline a good approach to getting into the sport.  You don't have to be young, fit, talented or rich, but at least one of them would be handy.

Never too young to start - kind of

OK, before I say anything about Kite Surfing and how cool it is. Do not start without lessons, either with someone you trust or preferrably with a trained professional.

However, see this photo, he is twelve.
